Habitat:
Grows in swampy places, from full sun to partial shade. The old rule “Sedges have edges and rushes are round” doesn't always hold true but does in this case. Sedges frequently have sharp edges hence the common term “cutty grass”. Carex virgata and the closely related C. secta grow in swampy places in full sun to partial shade. Both grow in clumps or tussocks rather than spread out, sometimes reaching a metre or more in height. Many of the sedges, especially these, tolerate flooding well and are common plants on river and swamp margins.
